Shamanic herbs cleanse ... Baños & Limpias

Updated: Oct 18, 2022

a Latin Tradition to cleanse the body & soul

Growing up in Colombia, at the tip of South America, was magical !!! literally a magical and shamanic experience for many of us. I remember waking up to the smell of fresh coffee and the sacred scent of my grandmother's cacao. I also remember my aunties and grandmothers talking about, and recommending baños and limpias to their friends whenever they were going through some difficult times or big transformations. You might be wondering, what are these baños she is talking about ? well, let me tell you, they are powerful tools not only to soothe the nervous system but also to cleanse the body and the energetic bodies from any low vibration energies and stress.

What is the herb bath or a Baño? and what is it for?

Herb baths are very popular in South America to remove low vibration energies, that we might accumulate in the physical and etheric body, however, there are different combinations of plants that can be used, depending on what you are looking for. One can make a baño or limpia with many intentions. Remember that tools like herbs, crystals, and candles are only an amplifier of our intentions.

For example, if you want to take an energetic and relaxing bath, the best plants are red roses, sage, rosemary, epazote, basil, mugwort, rue, and of course Epsom salt. These plants not only soothe the nervous system but also relax our muscles and uplift our mood. Epsom salt baths are particularly good for all the above, deep detox, and provide the body with key minerals.

However, if what you want is to expel the negativity accumulated in the mind and ethereal bodies, the ideal is to use bitter herbs such as rue, garlic, sage, eucalyptus, myrrh, juniper, myrtle, st john's wort, and Parietaria.

On the other hand, if you want to attract everything positive, prosperity, and tranquility to your life, you can use sweet herbs, such as mint, spearmint, chamomile, basil, cinnamon, jasmine, mallow, wild oregano, sunflowers, lavender.

How to prepare a baño o limpia ?

in our ancient traditions, our grandmoms or a curandera (shaman woman), would pick and prepare these baños for us depending on our intentions and/or spiritual needs, and then proceed to poor themselves these baños over our bodies from head to feet, allowing the waters to wash away on their way down whatever need it to be removed. these curanderas will repeat and say mantras to support the cleanse and to activate the power of the spoken word as well as to command any entities or low vibrations to leave and be transmuted by mother earth. Nowadays as we are all called to go within and awaken our inner goddess, our inner guru, and temple we can do this ritual for ourselves.

The preparation of a baño o limpia (magical and intentional herb bath) is simple, you'll need to boil 3 liters of water and add the herbs to let them rest, preferably on uneven numbers. Then, the leaves and branches are removed, to pour the water over the body, either in a tub or during normal bathing. It is recommended to carry out this process in the morning to start the day in the best way or to do it after a healing session or a ceremonial circle. but your intuition is king, let the inner white which tell you when and how.

After performing a bitter herbs baño o limpia, is very important to perform a sweet herbs bath, to fill up the spaces with high vibrations and to create a cocoon of sacred peace and protection. depending on what you are going through yourself and or your intention to carry out this process 3, 7, or 9 days. and finally, why not just allow yourself to submerge in these sacred waters once a month or whenever your inner goddess needs it.
